GREEN BAY, WI - Just 24 hours after facing off against the Fighting Saints in Dubuque, IA the Lumberjacks took to the ice at the Resch Center in Green Bay, WI for a USHL Eastern Conference matchup against the Gamblers. 6 goals on one end of the ice, and 49 saves on the other lifted the Jacks to a 6-3 win.
With the win Muskegon improves to 26-28-3-0 this season while the Gamblers have to wait at least one more night for their 30th win, and fall to 29-21-2-4 on the campaign.
The Lumberjacks opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead 15:28 into the first period. Jacob Terpstra won a faceoff on the near side of the Green Bay zone back to Matvei Gridin. The Russian tapped it back to Matthew Morden who carried the puck down the wall, around the net, and to the far side corner. A pass up the wall came to George Fegaris who walked to the middle of the blue line before firing a shot that was redirected in front by Teddy Spitznsgel for his second goal of the season.
Green Bay got one back two minutes later at the 17:40 mark when Raimonds Vitolins carried the puck into the near side of the Muskegon zone and sent a pass across the crease to the far side. The pass never reached its intended receiver, but instead banked off a Lumberjacks defenseman and into the back of the net.
Before the end of the period the Jacks regained the lead on the back of a Luke Buss goal. Morden carried the puck into the offensive zone and was forced to the near side in a battle for possession. After winning the battle Morden walked to the middle of the ice and sent a pass across to the far side. Another bounce off a skate, this time working out for the Lumberjack's Morden's pass found Buss back door to tap home for his 7th of the season.
The Gamblers tied the game at 2-2 just 1:53 into the second period with a power play goal from Jimmy Clark. Chris Romaine sent the puck to the far side of the Lumberjacks crease to Michael DeAngelo who then tapped it in front for Clark to tap to the back of the net.
At the 6:30 mark the Lumberjacks regained the lead with the first career USHL goal from Bauer Berry. Cody Croal held the puck at the blue line while Berry walked down the wall. Croal fed Berry on the far side then who walked in towards the net and fired a shot to the low far corner.
Croal added a goal of his own to extend the Jacks lead to 4-2. Laying a check onto a Gambler defenseman Croal won possession of the puck behind the net and bounced it off the back of Kristoffer Eberly and into the back of the net. For Croal it was his second point of the night, team leading 43rd of the season.
Owen Keefe opened the scoring in the third period at the 8:15 mark to make it 5-2 for the Lumberjacks. A play in tight to the Green Bay net saw Eberly out of position and on his backside unable to make a rebound save on Keefe who found the puck loose in the slot.
While on the power play in the final 5 minutes of play the Gamblers pulled their goalie to try and come back from the three goal deficit. Clark scored his second power play goal of the night, but Justin Solovey responded with an empty net goal from his own zone to regain the 3 goal lead 6-3.
Robbins (10-16-1) was lights out for the Lumberjacks stopping 49 of the Gamblers 52 shots on net. Eberly (22-12-1-4) wasn't as hot allowing 5 goals in 25 shots against.
