DUBUQUE, IA – The second period was an issue for the Muskegon Lumberjacks (7-6-0-2, 16 pts.), who allowed 4 unanswered goals from the Dubuque Fighting Saints (8-7-1-0, 17 pts.). as part of a 7-2 loss on Saturday night.
Each team found the back of the net twice in the first period for a 2-2 tie at the end of the opening frame. The Jacks scored first while on an Auto-Owners Insurance power play at 6:31 into the action.
Aiden Janz (Northville, MI) slid the puck to the middle of the blue line for
Lars Hutson (North Barrington, IL). Keeping the puck moving, Hutson moved it to the far side for
Felix Färhammar (Stockholm, SWE), who one-timed it to the back of the net for his 3
rd goal of the season.
Olle Darth scored both goals for the Saints, tying the score both times. Darth's first goal came just 2 minutes after Färhammar's. Darth used a wicked wrist shot to get the puck to the back of the net on a clean zone entry by the Saints.
A few moments later, Muskegon regained their lead off a great play from
Josh Toll (Rosemount, MN). The St. Thomas commit found possession between the circles in the Lumberjacks' zone and flipped the puck up the middle of the ice to
Nick Kosiba (New Boston, MI) behind the Dubuque defense. Kosiba ripped a forehand shot to the near post and into the back of the net with 9 minutes to play.
Darth's second goal came with just 18 seconds to play in the period. A bouncing puck in the low slot found his stick, with everyone nearby searching for it. Before anyone could react, Darth tapped the puck across the goal line for his second goal of the period.
Dubuque's four-goal second period built a hole too big for the Lumberjacks to climb out of. Add in a late goal in the third period to put an end to the comeback effort, and the Jacks found themselves packing the bus after a weekend split with the Saints.
Next week, the Jacks are back on home ice on Friday and Saturday night at Trinity Health Arena. T.S. Night, featuring music and references from Taylor Swift, is Friday at 7 pm. Saturday at 6 pm is Military Appreciation Night with a specialty jersey auction following the game.
