Doyon-Cataquiz Puts on a Show in 30-Save, 3-2 Win in Dubuque

Samuel Doyon-Cataquiz provided back-end security while Aiden Janz and Maxim Šimko each recorded 2 points up front.

DUBUQUE, IA – Samuel Doyon-Cataquiz (Montreal, QC, CAN) delivered another standout performance for the Muskegon Lumberjacks (7-5-0-2, 16 pts.), leading to a third straight win, 3-1 over the Dubuque Fighting Saints (7-7-1-0, 15 pts.)

The Lumberjacks scored in the opening period on a great play, starting with a neutral-zone turnover by Gustas Zemaitis (Barrington, IL). After winning possession in the middle of the ice, Zemaitis carried the puck into the offensive zone and fired a shot along the ice off the back wall. The puck popped to the far side of the slot, where Strider Carhart (Sea Girt, NJ) banged it across the goal line for his third goal of the season.

No one found the back of the net in the second period, but the Saints did have a pair of grade-A+ scoring chances. The first came in the form of a penalty shot for Trevor Thoyer 4 minutes into the frame. While the save from Doyon-Cataquiz was impressive, it was quickly outdone by a sprawling save while turning aside a 2-on-0 rush for the Saints just moments later in the period.

Dubuque opened the scoring in the third period to tie the game 1-1 with just over 15 minutes to play. Nikolai Zhukov fired a shot from the near side of the blue line, and Kane Johnson redirected it in the low slot to beat Doyon-Cataquiz for the first time all night.

The shift following the goal brought an immediate response from the Lumberjacks to regain the lead. Maxim Šimko (Poprad, SVK) won the center-ice faceoff, then picked up the puck at his own blue line. Šimko then passed to Aiden Janz (Northville, MI) on the near side of the neutral zone. Janz took a few steps into the offensive zone and fired a shot just over the goalie's pad for his 4th goal of the season.

Šimko added a goal of his own, three minutes later, off an assist from Janz after another turnover caused by the Lumberjacks allowed Janz to give Šimko the puck with space in the middle of the slot. Šimko's shot was nearly stopped by the goalie, but trickled across the goal line after squeaking through his armpit.

Cruz Martin scored late in regulation to cut the deficit to one, but Doyon-Cataquiz led the way as the Jacks held on to win 3-2.

With 30 saves on 32 shots, Doyon-Cataquiz (4-2-0-1) earned the win on his record and his 3rd straight. Joshua Banini (1-1-1-0) earned the loss, allowing 3 goals on 20 shots.

The teams return to ImOn Arena Saturday night at 8:05 pm ET to close out the two-game weekend series. Catch the action on FloHockey and on the Lumberjacks Hockey Network, presented by Gray Supply Corp.
