Three Lumberjacks Record Multiple Points in 5-1 Win over Under-17 Team

PLYMOUTH, MI – The Muskegon Lumberjacks (6-5-0-2, 14 pts.) put in a full 60-minute effort Wednesday night to earn two points and a commanding win over the USNTDP Under-17 Team (4-7-0-0, 8 pts.). Three Lumberjacks recorded multiple points while Samuel Doyon-Cataquiz (Montreal, QC, CAN) shut the door in the 5-1 win.

The Lumberjacks scored two highlight-reel goals in the first period, taking a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. The first came on an Auto Owners Insurance Power Play 5:35 into the period. Gustas Zemaitis (Barrington, IL) and Lars Hutson (North Barrington, IL) got the assists, but Louis Jonerheim (Lund, SWE) scored on an individual effort. Jonerheim picked up possession in the far corner, carried it up and around the zone to the near side of the slot, then ripped a shot into the back of the net.

Seven minutes later, another rocket beat the NTDP goalie. Huston picked up his second assist of the game by getting the puck up the near boards to Trey Wilson (St. Louis, MO) as he entered the offensive zone. Wilson held the puck on the near side for Drew Fox (Hickory Creek, TX), who ripped a shot off the far post and in for his 5th goal of the season.

No goals were scored in the second period, but the third brought a barrage of chances on both ends, starting less than a minute in with Teddy Lechner's (Bloomington, MN) first career USHL goal. Hutson held the puck on the far side of the blue line and slid it toward the middle for Lechner, who corralled the pass, fired off the far post, and put it in to make it 3-0.

The NTDP ended Doyon-Cataquiz's shutout streak in just over 5 periods, scoring at the 3:50 mark. RJ Thompson led a rush into the offensive zone and put a shot past the pad for his first USHL goal.

The Lumberjacks added two more first-career USHL goals to close out the win. The first came from Josh Toll (Rosemount, MN), who skated in his first game as a Lumberjack after being traded to Muskegon yesterday. Toll received the puck at the far side of the blue line from Lechner and floated a shot towards the goal. The puck bounced off a defenseman at the top of the crease and past the goalie, making it 4-0.

In the final seconds of the game, the Lumberjacks found themselves on a power play with an offensive-zone faceoff. Alex Smyth (Denver, CO) pushed the faceoff forward and popped toward the front of the net before sliding a shot on goal, creating a rebound on the far side. Wilson met the puck and tapped it across the goal line for his first goal.

Doyon-Cataquiz (3-2-0-1) stopped 21 of the 22 shots he faced in the win. Colby Arnold (0-3-0-0) took the loss, posting 26 saves on 28 shots in 40 minutes. Mason Martin played the third period for the NTDP and stopped 12 of 15 shots.

After the weekend off, the Jacks return to action in week 7 of the USHL regular season with a pair of games in Dubuque, IA against the Fighting Saints. For game times, scores, updates, and more visit muskegonlumberjacks.com.
