Muskegon, MI – The Lumberjacks return to Trinity Health Arena this weekend to face the Youngstown Phantoms for the first time during the 2026–27 regular season, renewing a rivalry between two familiar USHL foes. Muskegon enters the matchup with a 3-4-0-1 record, looking to capitalize on home-ice advantage and build momentum against a Youngstown squad sitting at 2-5-0-0. With both teams searching for consistency early in the season, the weekend series presents an opportunity for the Jacks to make a statement in front of their home crowd while reigniting a competitive rivalry with the Phantoms.
Week 4 Preview: When Rivals Collide
For Muskegon, a return to Trinity Health Arena offers a chance to reset, regroup, and reignite its early-season momentum against a familiar rival. The Lumberjacks welcome the Youngstown Phantoms for their first regular-season meeting of the 2026–27 campaign, with both clubs looking to find consistency in the opening weeks of the season. Muskegon enters the weekend at 3-4-0-1 after being swept by the Chicago Steel on the road, while Youngstown arrives at 2-5-0-0 following a split series against the Dubuque Fighting Saints and a commanding 7-2 victory over the USNTDP U-17s on Tuesday night.
That sets the stage for a pivotal weekend between two teams searching for a breakthrough. Neither Muskegon nor Youngstown has completed a series sweep this season, leaving both teams with an opportunity to change that narrative. For the Lumberjacks, the priority will be to rebound on home ice and rediscover the consistency that has eluded them through the early stretch. The Phantoms, meanwhile, will look to carry the confidence of their midweek victory into a matchup against a divisional rival.
Muskegon returns home looking to put its latest road trip behind it. The Jacks struggled to find their footing against Chicago, dropping both contests and missing an opportunity to gain ground in the standings. Now, with home-ice advantage on their side, the Lumberjacks have an opportunity to respond. A sharper, more consistent effort will be essential as Muskegon looks to turn the page and reestablish its identity in front of the home crowd.
Youngstown enters the weekend with a different kind of momentum. After earning a split against Dubuque, the Phantoms delivered on Tuesday night, rolling past the USNTDP U-17s by a 7-2 final. The result provides Youngstown with a boost heading into the weekend, but sustaining that production against Muskegon will be the next test. Against a Lumberjacks squad eager to respond, the Phantoms will have to prove their midweek performance can translate into success against an opponent like the Jacks.
The Lumberjacks and Phantoms arrive at Trinity Health Arena with different results behind them, but little separating their early-season ambitions. Muskegon will look to capitalize on home ice and turn a difficult road weekend into a fresh start, while Youngstown aims to build on its recent offensive surge. With neither club having swept a series to this point, the stakes extend beyond the weekend standings. For two teams searching for traction, this rivalry matchup offers an opportunity to seize momentum, establish a stronger identity, and take an important step forward in the early-season race.
Players to Watch
Louis Jonerheim – Forward
At 6-foot-5,
Louis Jonerheim (Lund, SWE) has brought an imposing presence to the Lumberjacks' forward group, giving Muskegon a valuable combination of size and potential as the season progresses. The Swedish forward reached a major milestone this past Friday, announcing his commitment to continue his hockey career at the NCAA Division I level with the University of Nebraska Omaha. With his collegiate future secured, Jonerheim will look to build that momentum on the ice, continuing to develop his game and contribute to the Lumberjacks' success.
Drew Fox – Forward
The 2009-born forward,
Drew Fox (Hickory Creek, TX), is quickly establishing himself as an offensive threat in his first season with the Lumberjacks. The 2009-born forward has steadily climbed Muskegon's goal-scoring leaderboard, showcasing a natural ability to capitalize on his opportunities against USHL competition. As Fox continues to adjust to the pace and physicality of junior hockey, his early production has made him a name to watch within the Lumberjacks' forward group. With plenty of season left to build on his promising start, Fox will look to maintain his scoring pace and provide a consistent offensive spark as
Muskegon pushes forward.
Teddy Lechner – Defense
As an important piece of the Lumberjacks' blue line,
Teddy Lechner (Bloomington, MN) is continuing to build his résumé as one of Muskegon's defensemen to watch. Lechner enters the season with a promising future already taking shape, having committed to Augustana University and been selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL Draft. The defenseman has opened his campaign this season with two assists, contributing offensively from the back end while maintaining an even plus-minus rating. As Muskegon looks to shore up its defensive game and regain consistency, Lechner's ability to contribute at both ends of the ice could prove valuable.
The Opponent
The Youngstown Phantoms have finally found the win column, and apparently, two victories in a week are enough to make the early season struggles a distant memory. Sitting at 2-5-0-0, Youngstown has spent much of the opening stretch looking for answers, only to string together its first pair of wins in the last week. For a team trying to reclaim its place among the Eastern Conference's contenders, the recent turnaround is a start, but it is hardly a coronation. Two wins can spark a comeback story, or they can be a brief flash in the pan before reality catches up. The Phantoms will need more than a one-week hot streak to prove which narrative they deserve.
Last season did little to strengthen Youngstown's case. The Phantoms' Clark Cup Playoff run came to an end against the sixth-seeded Madison Capitols, leaving Youngstown on the outside looking in while the postseason continued without them. Now, after opening the new campaign at 2-5-0-0, the Phantoms are once again playing catch-up. The recent wins have given them a pulse, but a pulse is not the same as a powerhouse. If Youngstown intends to change the conversation around its program, it will have to demonstrate that these victories are the beginning of something sustainable, not two lucky breaks dressed up as a resurgence.
There is one Phantom who deserves considerably more respect than the team's record might suggest: Owen Lepak. The goaltender played all 60 minutes in each of Youngstown's back-to-back wins, helping give the team a chance to collect points and build some confidence. Lepak has been a key figure in the recent turnaround, and his ability to keep games within reach could once again be Youngstown's greatest advantage. The question is whether the Phantoms can give him enough support to make his efforts count. A hot goaltender can cover plenty of flaws, but he cannot be expected to paper over every crack for an entire season.
