MUSKEGON, MI - After falling to the Madison Capitols a night before the Muskegon Lumberjacks took to the ice at Trinity Health Arena to close out the weekend series. A 3 goal first period with some goal support through the end of the game lifted the caps to the 5-2 win and weekend sweep over Muskegon to end the season series.
With the loss Muskegon falls to 26-31-3 this season while the Capitols pick up their 16th win of the season and improve to 16-39-2-2 heading into the final week of the USHL regular season.
Three unanswered goals from the Capitols in the first period lifted the visitors to a lead heading into the first intermission. Andrew Kuzma started the party 6:35 into the game finishing a play started by linemate Jonah Aegerter. Max Nagel added a goal of his own by finishing a back door, cross crease pass sent by Oliver Flinn. A controversial goal followed for Jack Brandt at the 12:11 mark when he found the puck on the far side of the crease with Jacks goalie Sebastian Gatto unable to get over to make a save thanks to a Capitols player laying on top of him in the crease.
Madison added another goal to open the scoring in the second period to make it 4-0 through 23 minutes of game play. Kuzma scored his second of the game while on the power play while future Quinnipiac Bobcat Nick Wallace provided the assist.
Muskegon got one back with a power play goal of their own at the 6:36 mark. Ethan Whitcomb gave the puck to Gavin McCarthy at the top of the near side circle in the Madison zone. McCarthy slid the puck to Nicholas Rexine at the goal line and the New York native gave it back to McCarthy to one time to the back of the net.
Ethan Fredericks scored his second goal of the weekend to bring the Jacks back within a pair of goals 8:08 into the third period. Fredericks left his own zone on the near side wall and found Whitcomb on the far side by the benches. Whitcomb received the pass and entered the offensive zone on a two-on-one with Fredericks. Whitcomb gave it to Fredericks who pulled the puck to his backhand and chipped it over the net minder and into the back of the net.
With the goalie pulled the Lumberjacks applied the pressure on the Capitols with hopes of closing the deficit late in the game. Unfortunately Finn Brink found himself behind the Jacks defense with an open net and made it 5-3 to ice the game for the Capitols and clinch the weekend sweep.
Gatto (0-1-0) started the game and lasted 23 minutes stopping 14 of 18 Madison shots. Coming in relief Raythan Robbins was a perfect 8 for 8 through 34 minutes and change. Ratislav Elias (8-17-0-2) earned the win in the crease by making 28 saves on 30 Lumberjacks shots.
