MUSKEGON, MI - The Muskegon Lumberjacks have made a move to strengthen their already strong defensive core by adding a big bodied, veteran defenseman Filip Nordberg. A native of Stockholm, Sweden Nordberg was a 2022 2nd round draft pick of the Ottawa Senators.
Nordberg, a 2004 birth year, has been a member of the Swedish National team each of the last three seasons at the under 18, 19, and 20 levels. Last season Nordberg spent the majority of the year with Sodertalje SK in the J20 National and HockeyAllsvenskan leagues in Sweden.
"I am very proud to announce I will be playing for the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL and hope to help bring success to the team and organization and help them win a championship. Everything I have heard about them is that they are a top junior program in North America and I am excited they can help me reach my goals." Said Nordberg. He added "I feel coming to North America will help me reach my long term goal of being a NHL defenseman in the future."
Head coach of the Lumberjacks Parker Burgess gave his thoughts on the addition of Nordberg to the roster. "Bringing in Filip adds an element of stability and experience to our back end." "It's already a solid D-core and this move enhances our depth and our talent on the back end." added Burgess.
Lumberjacks President of Hockey Operations Steve Lowe spoke about Nordbergs arrival in Muskegon as well. "I would like to thank his team in Sweden for allowing his release, and the Ottawa Senators for their continued support in the development of players in Muskegon."
Lowe added "This is a great move for the USHL and speaks volumes for the development of players in our league. We are looking forward to having Filip in games next weekend and looking to get him out to Muskegon as soon as possible."
Nordberg joins Ty Henricks (2023, NYR), David Klee (2023, SJS), and fellow defenseman Jack Sparkes (2023, LAK) as NHL Draft picks on the Lumberjacks roster, and Lukas Swedin as the second Swedish born player.
