Lumberjacks finally lose their slim lead in the third period, fall to Youngstown 2-1 in overtime

The Jacks led 1-0 until midway through the third period, when Youngstown scored and forced overtime

The Muskegon Lumberjacks could not hold on to a thin one-goal lead all night.

The Jacks scored a first period goal on Friday night in Youngstown, and that was the only goal in the game for a long time.

But the host Phantoms found the net in the third period to force overtime, then stole away a 2-1 victory with a goal by Chase Pietila at 3:47 of the extra session.

The loss ruined a very strong performance by Lumberjacks goalie Conor Callaghan, who stopped 31 of 33 shots on the night. Callaghan was particularly impressive in the third period, facing a barrage of 16 Youngstown shots and stopping all but one.

Muskegon, now 12-10-2, has lost three straight games.  Youngstown improved to 10-8-3.

The two teams will do battle again on Saturday night in Youngstown in the final game before the USHL's Christmas break. The Lumberjacks' first game following the break will be Dec. 30 at Team USA. They will host Team USA the next evening in a New Year's Eve game.

The first two periods of Friday's game had very little offense, with the Phantoms outshooting the Jacks 8-7 in the first and 7-4 in the second.

Muskegon's Sacha Boisvert scored the only goal of the first period at the 14:22 mark, with assists from Tyler Dunbar and Nicholas Rexine. The was no scoring at all in the second period.

Younsgtown finally pulled even with a goal by Shane Lachance at 14:10 of the third period. The Phantoms outshot the Jacks 16-5 in the period, but could not get a go-ahead goal past Callaghan.

That happened in overtime when Pietila scored the winner.

The Jacks hurt themselves by failing to score on five power play opportunities. Youngstown cashed in on two of eight.
