Lumberjacks complete weekend sweep in Madison with a 4-3 win over the Caps

The Jacks have now won three straight games

The Muskegon Lumberjacks completed a weekend sweep on Saturday, defeating the Madison Capitols 4-3 at the Bob Suter Capitol Ice Arena in Madison, Wisconsin.

Muskegon, which has now won three straight games, improved to 6-4 on the season, good for 12 points and a fourth-place tie in the USHL's Eastern Conference.

The Lumberjacks are just three points out of first place, behind conference leaders Team USA and Chicago.

Muskegon will return home for its next three games, starting Saturday against Youngstown and then hosting Green Bay the following Friday and Saturday nights.

The Lumberjacks opened the scoring at the 12:45 mark of the first period on a goal from Luke Buss, with an assist from Jack Reimann.

Muskegon made it 2-0 with a tally from Sacha Boisvert 6:30 into the second period. Tyler Hotson and Gavin McCarthy were credited with assists.

The Capitols responded at the 11:27 mark of the second period with a goal from Miko Matikka.

The Lumberjacks led 2-1 heading into the third period.

Both teams scored 27 seconds apart midway through the third.

Cody Croal added to the Lumberjacks; lead with a goal 11:30 into the period to increase the advantage to 3-1. Buss assisted on the tally.

Madison responded with a power play goal at the 11:57 mark from Jack Musa.

The Lumberjacks added a goal from captain Owen Mehlenbacher at the 13:54 mark to take a 4-2 lead.

The Capitols closed out the scoring with Mitikka's second goal of the contest 16:17 into the third period.

The Lumberjacks held on to their one-goal lead in the final three minutes to close out the victory.

Muskegon outshot the Capitols by a 39-35 margin. Goalie Conor Callaghan stopped 32 of 35 shots on net to collect his fifth straight win.

The Lumberjacks failed to score on their lone power play, while the Capitols scored two goals on five opportunities.
